TALK:

Discuss these questions together as you experiment with the xylophone and the measure the sounds using the iPad apps SpectrumView and Decibel 10th. Use the High Frequency Noise app to create different frequency sounds.

    1. What is different about the sounds that change frequency?

    2. What is amplitude, and how do you know based on your iPad measurements?

    3. How many decibels is a conversation in a normal voice?

    4. How many decibels of sound did the xylophone create when you played it loud?

    5. What is a decibel?

MAKE:

    1. Rehearse an audio recording with your group which defines amplitude, decibels, and frequency. Use this as your script:

      1. Hello, today is ___________, and this is _____________, a ___th grader in Mrs. ___________ class at Independence Elementary school in Yukon, Oklahoma.

      2. Today we [SUMMARIZE WHAT YOU DID AT THIS CENTER.]

      4. I think "decibels" means ________________.

      5. I think "frequency" means _______________.

    2. Create an AudioBoo recording using this script. When you save your AudioBoo, be sure to:

      1. Include your homeroom teacher's name, the primary speaker's first name, and the Center name in the TITLE. Example: Winters - Susan - Measuring Sound with iPads
